Dilemmas
  • FreeBSD or Debian? Although I prefer FreeBSD’s base system (all essential software is developed by the same group, unlike GNU/Linux distributions which mostly just package other software), Debian has APT, which I prefer to Ports. It also has a stronger focus on freedom than FreeBSD, which I like.
  • QWERTY or Dvorak? In general, I find it easier to type on a Dvorak keyboard than on QWERTY. However, lots of things have keybindings specially set up for QWERTY: movement in VI, for example, is H, J, K and L. And Emacs is completely unusable on Dvorak: Control-X Control-S Control-X Control-C (save, then quit) is fine on QWERTY, but nightmareish on Dvorak, where it’s equivalent to Control-B Control-; Control-B Control-I.
Firefox versus Opera

What actual useful new features does Firefox 2.0 have over Firefox 1.5? All that’s really noticable is the new interface, and the ability to subscribe to feeds with external readers…

Since this afternoon, I’ve been using Opera (actually, the statically-compiled 32-bit Linux version, since the native FreeBSD one in Ports apparently is broken on AMD64). It’s quite nice; I’m not sure if I’ll use it full-time but I’m planning to keep it, and maybe Konqueror, around for testing purposes.
